What is the purpose of face primer?
When it comes to applying primer in your makeup routine, there are two camps–those who are pro-primer and those who skip it entirely. “Primer is one of those products that people assume is a non-negotiable step, but honestly it depends on your skin type and what you’re trying to achieve,” says Joy. “If you have oily skin, large pores, or you need your makeup to last through a long day or a hot summer (like the current heatwave), primer is absolutely worth it. For quick, light coverage on a good skin day, you can skip it, but for any serious makeup, I’d always reach for one,” she says.
When should I use face primer?
“Primer can be incredibly beneficial for certain skin types and concerns,” says Ranti. Once you understand its various uses, you can decide when and where you might need primer. For those with dry or textured skin, a hydrating primer “helps to moisturise the skin and create a smoother surface before applying foundation, especially if you’re creating a full glam look,” she continues. “It can also help prevent foundation from separating or clinging to dry patches, while a gripping primer keeps the foundation from moving throughout the day.”
If you’ve got oily skin, an oil-control primer can help to regulate excess oil production and minimize shine. “There’s a common misconception that an oil-control primer should leave your skin looking completely matte,” Ranti continues. “Instead, it’s designed to help prevent the skin from producing excess oil too quickly. You’ll still develop some natural shine throughout the day, but your makeup should wear much better.
Do you put moisturizer on before or after primer?
A common mistake is not applying primer in the right order, but Joy clarifies why it’s important to only apply it after you’ve completed your skin care routine. “Primer works best when it has a smooth and moisturized base to sit on,” she says. “I’ve heard clients say they just go in straight after a cleanser with their primer,” says Ranti. “We don’t need to do that!”
How do I apply primer to my face?
To help you get the most out of your primer, Ranti shares a simple skin care routine order that you can implement to prep your skin properly.
- Cleanse the skin.
- Apply a light moisturizer.
- Apply facial SPF (during the day).
- Rehydrate the skin with a hydrating facial mist.
- Allow the mist to settle, or use a handheld fan to speed up the process.
