The luxury handbag market has seen everything from diamond-encrusted clutches to record-breaking Hermès Birkins. Now, a bag made from a piece of the king of the dinosaurs is entering the conversation. The world’s first handbag made from lab-grown Tyrannosaurus rex collagen is heading to auction in Paris, where experts believe it could sell for up to $500,000.
According to The New York Post, the teal-colored purse will be offered through Hôtel Drouot on June 11, marking the first time a piece of so-called T. rex leather has been made available to collectors. The project combines biotechnology, fashion, and paleontology, transforming proteins linked to an animal that vanished roughly 66 million years ago into a modern luxury accessory.
Since intact dinosaur DNA no longer exists, researchers couldn’t simply recreate a Tyrannosaurus rex from fossil remains. Instead, scientists analyzed fragments of fossilized collagen, a structural protein found in connective tissue, and used artificial intelligence to reconstruct what those ancient sequences may have looked like.
The resulting genetic blueprint was then introduced into living cells, which produced the collagen later used to create the finished material.
Behind the project is a team that includes Newcastle University tissue engineering professor Che Connon, along with researchers from VML, The Organoid Company, and Lab-Grown Leather Ltd. The goal extends beyond creating a headline-grabbing handbag.
Scientists involved say the technology could eventually help develop sustainable alternatives to conventional animal leather.
“The hard bit is making leather from cells, and we’ve done that,” Connon previously said. Addressing criticism surrounding the project, he added, “Some people have got the wrong end of the stick, saying, ‘Well, you can’t do it.’ But that’s not true.”
The handbag has already generated attention because it sits at the intersection of two booming industries: luxury collectibles and bioengineered materials. In recent years, fashion brands have invested heavily in lab-grown alternatives to exotic skins, while biotech firms have explored ways to produce durable materials without relying on livestock.
The T. rex project pushes that idea several steps further by drawing inspiration from prehistoric biology.
Auctioneer Alexandre Giquello believes the piece represents something larger than a luxury accessory. “This T. rex leather bag marks a defining moment in my career: a one-of-a-kind piece that stands as a historic milestone,” he said in a statement. “A defining moment that challenges the boundaries of creativity and luxury.”
Whether buyers view it as a fashion statement, a scientific breakthrough, or simply the ultimate conversation piece, the handbag is already making history.
After all, luxury houses have spent decades selling exclusivity. But few can claim to offer a piece made from materials provided by the most famous apex predator ever to walk the Earth.
