After an excellent start with Booksmart, Olivia Wilde’s directing career hit a bit of a snag with the Don’t Worry Darling. The Invite, however, looks good enough to make us forget all about the thriller’s behind-the-scenes drama, as Wilde returns to the world of comedy with a smart, sexy, twisty take on modern relationships co-written by Rashida Jones.
The cast? Stacked. The premise? Unclear. The sexual tension? Off the charts. Here’s everything we know about The Invite…
What is The Invite about?
Much like with A24’s The Drama, The Invite seems to have a central secret—or secrets—that turns the lives of two couples on their heads, and the marketing is purposely dancing around what that secret is. We know it centers on an unhappy married couple, Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Olivia Wilde), who invite their sexy upstairs neighbors over for dinner, and things almost definitely take a partner-swapping turn, as the end of the trailer finds Seth Rogen listing out the participants in the swinging, surprised to be included.
All that said, the movie had its world premiere at Sundance in January, so there are reviews out if you want to be spoiled, plus this is a remake of a Spanish film that has also been remade four other times, not including The Invite. So you can find out what happens if you want to. This version was penned by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack.
Who is in the cast?
Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen play the couple hosting the dinner, while Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz are the slightly mysterious, sexy neighbors who attend as guests.
Is there a trailer?
Yep! And it looks tense and good.
When does The Invite come out?
The Invite will premiere in select theaters on June 26, and everywhere in July.
This post will be updated.
