The key moment of the first part of Stranger Things season 5 takes place at the military base, where Dr. Kay had Holly’s class locked up, and where Mike and his friends were trying to help them escape.

Soon, the base is overrun with Demogorgons that target the children—and just when it seems everyone there is going to die, Will Byers undergoes a brutal transformation. Living up to the title of Sorcerer that Mike gave him, Will manifests powers and uses them to control the creatures and destroy them all without touching them, much like Eleven can do with her own powers.

All of this seems to be connected to what happened to him in 1983, and the powers appeared now because Will was finally able to be part of the battle, and he was determined to prevent other children from suffering what he suffered.

The powers come from both the Upside Down and Vecna, and that’s why they are so similar to the villain’s—which are also very similar to Eleven’s—but they are used differently.

What powers does Will Byers have? If his powers are like Eleven’s and Vecna’s, then he has telekinesis, telepathy, the ability to enter people’s minds and memories, the power to control people and living beings (which we saw when he “froze” the creatures), the power to destroy someone using his mind (which we also saw with the monsters that were about to attack his friends), and, most clearly, the ability to connect with the “hive mind” and the Upside Down.

Vecna can also create worlds and dimensions (that’s how she created Camazotz to trap Holly Wheeler ), but it’s unclear if this is something Will could do as well.

The most important question left: Did Vecna know Will would have those powers and allow him to use them, or was it something that took him by surprise? If Vecna knew about Will’s powers, then allowing him to destroy the Demogorgons that were after the children has to have been part of the plan.
