Giddy up, cowboys. Pull out your Luccheses and your Tecovas, dust off your Wrangler Cowboy Cut jeans and your biggest belt buckle. Westernwear is here for 2025.

Keen eyes will remember when cowboy-core had its little moment in 2024—there was a brief resurgence of fringe and bootcut jeans for a minute, and I’d personally never seen quite so many cowboy boots on the New York City streets—but if the first few weeks of ’25 are any indication, we’re in for a full-blown Year of Yeehaw. Expect the trend to hang around for a good minute, but perhaps not in the way you’re expecting. Think less Yellowstone cosplay, and more subtle touches of Westernwear here and there, whether through accessories or clothes.

Some might read it in the stars; I read it in the stars. Stars like Timothée Chalamet, who stepped out in Palm Springs earlier this month wearing head-to-toe Wrangler, with some cowboy boots to go with it—a departure from his typical red carpet vibe. Then, a few weeks later, Chalamet stepped out again in an archival True Religion look—red-tinted and streetwear-ready, Nudie suit-esque, sure, classically rodeo-ready and cowboy at its core.

With that being said—don’t be afraid to pull out the giant cowboy hat if you did want to go all-in. Take inspiration from rapper Playboi Carti at Milan Fashion Week, decked out in a full-on, neo-Western fit, complete with the pinched-front hat, double-breasted overcoat, and chunky boots.

And, like I said before; it’s all about dabbling in Westernwear, not going full-on cowboy at every opportunity. Carti perfects the trend with his cowboy hat and tailored coat combo; it just takes one accessory, sometimes two. This year, we’re going to be seeing a much more subtle shift into cowboy couture, centered on the incorporation of traditionally Western and Southern heritage brands into our wardrobes.

This kind of dressing is going to be the key to the Westernwear trend this year; few of us will want to head out the door in the morning in a head-to-toe cowboy outfit, lasso at the ready. Instead, it’s all about choosing bits and pieces of Westernwear to incorporate into our everyday style; accessories like cowboy boots, flashy belt buckles, or a cowboy hat; silhouettes like bootcut jeans or some fringe; brands with roots in Western style, like Wrangler, Stetson, or even Frye.

Esquire’s Senior Market Editor, Alfonso Fernandez Navas, reports back on the trend from Paris Fashion Week: “Westernwear is being dismantled and, rightfully, evolving,” he says. “I call it a ‘Neo-Westernwear,’ where the clothes no longer look so literal and erring on costume. From pairing bolo ties with T-shirts to Western shirts in fine wool and corduroy, Westernwear is leaving the ranch and hitting the street. The idea of the cowboy is now interpreted in more playful and elevated ways, but still covetable.”

Something as simple as a bandana around your neck, or a pair of cowboy boots peeking out from underneath your pants, gives your fit enough of a Western nudge to play into the trend this year.

And if fashion month has been any indication, the Western trend is sticking around for a while; with bolo ties at Isabel Marant, and cowboy boot trompe-l’oeil prints and Western-inspired plaques at Acne Studios, we’re keeping up with cowboy-core all through fall and winter, baby.
