Whenever you see a turnaround, it’s fair to wonder if it’s a blip or something more sustainable. In regards to Gap, what could be dismissed as the former now feels like a veritable comeback. You could tie the resurgence to the broader mall brand renaissance, but it does seem like what’s happening at Gap is a bit more specific to, well, Gap.
How? Well, instead of a full-stop reinvention a la Abercrombie, Gap seems to have gone with some thoughtful introspection, injecting its iconic catalog from years’ past with just enough modern sensibility to slide seamlessly into anyone’s wardrobe, across the full spectrum of silhouette preference, with precisely zero pretense. In other words, eminently wearable clothes that you won’t feel guilty about wearing.

In fact, on a pound for pound basis, Gap might be punching as hard as anyone in the game, and it’s been pumping out hit after hit this fall.
It’s sweaters are the kind you can live in without having to develop a rapport with your dry cleaner. The lightweight outerwear—whether that’s the canvas chore coat, the utility jacket or the like—is the sort that requires no break-in to enjoy, but also gets better with wear, and the heavier fare is as warm as pieces three times the price.
Or its baggier pant slate, for instance, rivals headline-grabber like Abercrombie’s, tough enough to wear into the ground and priced to make you not feel guilty about doing so. (I wrote about the brand’s pleated pants over the summer and can’t wait to wear them again this spring.) And if you don’t have a cocoon-abetting Gap hoodie on deck, that’s mostly just your loss.
And guess what? It’s all seriously discounted at the moment. And because it is, we went through and grabbed some of our favorites, but we very much encourage you to check it all out here.
