If our years of experience have taught us anything, it’s that “best” is highly subjective. The GQ office is just as varied in body type, stylistic preference, and budget as the rest of the world, and if you polled our colleagues, you’d be hard-pressed to land on a single pick that everyone agrees on. So with that in mind, we made every effort to cast as wide of a net as possible, with an eye on identifying the superlative picks across three key categories: quality, fit, and price.
These days, you can find a rugby shirt for as little as $100 or as much as $1,000. Be wary of sky-high prices, though: expensive doesn’t always mean better, and affordable doesn’t always mean bad. During our testing, there were $50 options that surprised us and $500 options that disappointed us—but for the most part, the best of the bunch landed squarely between those two extremes.
To kick off the process, we enlisted a who’s who of GQ staffers to wear-test our contenders. Some of them have worked in retail, slinging clothes to the masses; others have toiled for small-batch menswear labels; all spend way too much time thinking about the precious real estate in their closets.
We leaned on that collective experience to guide our search, culling a mix of household names, indie favorites, and the artisanal imprints on the bleeding-edge of the genre. Then we narrowed down the assortment to the picks that scored the highest across quality, fit, and price. (Like we said—different strokes for different folks.)
Our testers owned plenty of the picks on this list already, but a handful were totally new to us. So after several months of intense wear, we recorded our deeply scientific observations and rejiggered our selections accordingly. Based on those evaluations, we ran the numbers, collated the anecdotal evidence, and emerged with a list of what we believe to be the absolute best rugby shirts for men right now, from the tried-and-true stalwarts to the modern disruptors, the affordable beaters to the wildly expensive (but wildly worth-it) designer riffs.

How to Style a Rugby Shirt
