It’s rare that a band changes the world, but Nirvana did. When the Kurt Cobain-fronted trio hit mainstream television and radio in 1991, its loud, melodic noise-punk swept pop stars and pompous rockers from the airwaves, making way for a new youth culture and way of living to take over the decade.
Along with serious songs and heavy chops, Nirvana used strong visuals to tell its story. In addition to long hair, thrift-store cardigans, destroyed jeans, and shredded canvas sneakers, the band also had a killer logo, incisive album covers, beloved posters, and a stack of canonical rock tees. That includes its seminal smiley face shirt and logo, which helped launch Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind.
Now, for the first time ever, Nirvana is releasing some of that artwork on a series of collectable watches. Made with Carlsbad, California, watchmaker Nixon, the Nirvana timepieces come in four different designs, including the Time Teller, the Sentry Leather, the Sentry Wobble, and the ultra-limited Sentry Wobble in all-black. Only 150 of the ultra-limited, individually numbered Nirvana Sentry Wobble all-black watches have been made. The first 100 of them go on sale on the NTWRK app today, September 30, at 12PM ET/9AM PT. Don’t sleep and hit the app to set your notifications for the drop now.
The Nirvana Sentry Wobble all-black sports the band’s legendary smiley face dimensionally up-printed on the dial, which is housed in a unique “warped,” stainless steel case, all secured with a matching 3-link band. It’s the first time Nixon has altered the case on its Sentry Watch, one of the company’s most popular models. The Nirvana Sentry Wobble all-black retails for $325.
If you miss out on the NTWRK drop of the super limited Nirvana Sentry Wobble all-black, there are more collectable Nirvana watches coming from Nixon the following day, Tuesday, October 1.
First among them is the Sentry Wobble, which sports the same construction as the all-black model, but comes in a tumbled stainless steel for a “worn” finish. There’s also the Nirvana Time Teller in a black design with yellow numerals in the band’s font and a gray smiley face at the center of the dial.
The third watch in the Nirvana collection is a Sentry Leather with a sunset fade face and a reflective Nirvana wordmark in place of numerals, echoing the group’s beloved MTV Unplugged album artwork. It comes with a nappy-suede band that recalls the famous cardigan worn at the performance.
