The first time I wore them, I felt like I was living in a meme. “What are those?!” my girlfriend asked, pointing to the Dr. Martens on my feet. She had a point. These weren’t the British cobbler’s unassailable derbies, or even its Tyler, the Creator-approved loafers. These were a far less ubiquitous—and, really, only slightly more questionable—silhouette: the Mary Jane, distinguished by its telltale T-bar strap across the top of the vamp. Much to my long-suffering partner’s chagrin, I’ve been wearing them non-stop all summer. And now I’d like to gently recommend that you do, too, because Amazon just knocked close to $50 off their price.
I don’t fault my girlfriend for her skepticism. I get it. (In all other matters, her taste is impeccable.) Justin Bieber cosign aside, Mary Janes can feel a little much, especially if you’re used to riding out the dog days of July in buttery loafers or trashed sneakers. But the “much” part is exactly why I like ‘em, and Dr. Martens’ riff on the style does more than almost any other I’ve encountered. Think of them as a Frankenstein-like mashup of the summer kicks you already love: the breezy woven uppers borrow from huaraches, the hefty soles crib shamelessly from loafers, and the easy on-off access almost puts mules to shame.
It helps that Mary Janes are enjoying what we in the biz call a “moment” right now; the first time I wore them to the office, a colleague wearing a similar pair beelined my way to flick us up for perpetuity. Other than my girlfriend’s gentle roasting, the only response they’ve elicited has been delight, and a heckuva lot of unprompted compliments. When it comes to filling my seasonal footwear prescription, there’s only one doctor I trust—and he happens to be doling out the goods for 25% less than usual.
