Dr. Downie recommends chemical sunscreen formulas for “more melanated patients of all ethnicities.” “As far as ingredients to look for, I prefer avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, micronized zinc oxide, and octinoxate because these rub nicely on darker skin tones,” she says. “Many of the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide [formulas] are thick, less absorbable, and leave a white cast.”

Beet the Sun is a lightweight, chemical formula that protects deep skin tones without a white cast. Unlike some SPFs that take seemingly forever to blend in, this one quickly disappears without a trace. It’s packed with great-for-your-skin ingredients, including moisturizing vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and beetroot extract, which contains antioxidants that offer an extra line of defense against free radicals and UV rays.

“This has quickly become one of my new favorite sunscreens,” says Wodarcyk. “It’s so light, it feels like nothing. Even my partner, who is sensitive to the way most sunscreens feel, appreciated how featherweight this formula is. I also love that it’s hydrating enough to give skin a nice glow without making it look greasy.”
