Flower nail designs are a spring staple for a reason: They’re cute and seasonal without feeling over-the-top. Just look to stars like Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, and Hailey Bieber, who have all sported flower-inspired sets, for proof. Best yet, as far as nail art goes, florals are some of the easiest designs to DIY. That is, as long as you have the right tools and techniques handy.
“We’re seeing an increase in floral mani popularity, especially minimal floral patterns,” Juli Russell, DIY nail expert for Sally Beauty, tells Glamour. As for why that is? “They’re easy to create and, more importantly, easy to customize and make your own,” she says. “A lot of very cute floral manicures can be done using your fave summer polishes and a dotting tool, which is a nail art tool that has rounded sides for creating perfect dots.”
Need a cute floral mani in a pinch? You can also use the end of a bobby pin to create tidy dots on your nails.
While floral nail designs are the perfect excuse to wear your favorite pastel shades, you don’t need a huge arsenal of colors to create a trendy manicure. It also pays to think outside the box with your palette. “Electric blue is super popular this season,” Russell says. If you’re looking for something softer, though, copy the Selena Gomez–approved yellow mani trend and go with a buttercup-inspired design.
Before starting your floral mani, Russell suggests grabbing a pack of dotting tools to help you perfect your designs. “They come with an assortment of sizes so you can create a smaller floral print with the small sizes or flip the tool and use the larger end,” she says. And if you’re a total beginner, there’s no need to worry: This Nail Art 101 Basics video from DIY University by Sally Beauty explains in depth how to use dotting tools and other nail art accessories.
