Dry skin types craves moisture, which is why Blair Murphy-Rose, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skincare Junkie, recommends the oil-rich Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing Balm. It contains a mix of nourishing oils, waxes, and vitamin E, plus elderberry and starflower oils for an antioxidant-rich balm that moisturizes while it cleanses. It’s also great for removing makeup: The balm effortlessly blends with oil-based makeup and is then removed with a warm damp cloth. But note that this creamy balm is not ideal for every skin type: Dr. Murphy-Rose recommends this only for dry skin that isn’t acne-prone since its high oil content may cause breakouts.
Here’s what Glamour contributor Emily Tannenbaum says about its application and texture: “I used to double cleanse whenever I wore mascara (every day), but that’s not necessary with Elemis. This balm feels kind of like sorcery—when you apply the balm to your dry face, it instantly melts into an oil, which lifts away makeup, sunscreen, and everyday grime. Once you add water, however, that oil takes on a milky consistency that washes off with no need for excessive rubbing or a second pass with a basic cleanser. Instead of stripping my skin of moisture, my skin is left feeling plump and hydrated thanks to an antioxidant-rich algae called Padina pavonica. Unfortunately, there is a downside. While the balm does not irritate my sensitive skin, it has an extremely strong smell and taste when it inevitably winds up in my mouth (I’m not a dainty face-washer). I hear there is a fragrance-free option I would personally like to try, but if that’s not a problem for you, this cleanser is definitely worth the splurge.”
