In theory, yes. “Inflammation of the scalp is the number one disrupter of hair growth cycles and can contribute to hair loss. Research shows that Rosemary oil exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, potentially reducing inflammation in the scalp and creating a more favorable environment for healthy hair growth,” explains Blakely.

The key components scientists refer to when evaluating the benefits of rosemary oil are ursolic acid, found to increase circulation, and carsonic acid, which may have positive effects on nerve damage. “This healing may rejuvenate nerves in the scalp, which can possibly restore hair growth,” says Friese. Other reported benefits of rosemary oil include antioxidant protection, inhibiting DHT activity, and “stimulating hair follicles at the cellular level to help support hair growth,” adds Blakley.

In other words, rosemary oil can both create an optimal environment for hair growth while it also stimulates hair growth.

There are two caveats to consider.

First, these benefits are only relevant when the cause of the hair loss is a disrupted hair growth cycle, says Blakely. “Rosemary oil will not work on hair loss caused by a damaged or miniaturized hair follicle,” she says.

Secondly, many of the studies exploring the potential benefits of rosemary oil for hair loss are in-vitro studies, meaning they’re performed in a test tube, not a human or animal, explains Andy Goren, MD, a trichologist at Daniel Alain. “These types of studies rarely translate into a product that when applied to the human scalp exerts any therapeutic effect,” he says.

One randomized controlled 2015 study, which compares the effects of rosemary oil to topical hair loss drug minoxidil (the active ingredient found in Rogaine) as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia found that rosemary oil was just as effective after six months.

The bottom line: if you’re dealing with hair loss, start by seeing a dermatologist or trichologist who can assess the underlying causes, and what might be the best course of treatment for you.
