This past year delivered an embarrassment of riches for TV lovers, and though it was hard work to narrow down the best TV shows of 2023, we accepted the challenge.

The limited series made a comeback—Queen Charlotte, A Small Light, Lessons in Chemistry—and a number of hits came to a close. Goodbye Succession, adios The Great, adieu Barry! Historical fiction series The Crown came to its inevitable conclusion, while The Bear proved that its fantastic first season wasn’t just a fluke.

Two of the buzziest shows were a bit of a surprise. Freevee had its first hit with Jury Duty, while The Golden Bachelor proved that all the franchise needed to become a must-watch again was to shake up its core conceit, not invent extra drama.
