All I want for Christmas is Ken—and Ryan Gosling has more than delivered.
Just when we thought Barbie-mania was dying down, the star of Greta Gerwig’s record-smashing film proved us all wrong. That’s right, Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson (the producer who, along with Andrew Wyatt, wrote “I’m Just Ken” for Barbie) have released a festive remix of “I’m Just Ken.” Merry Christmas.
And there’s more—the pair also released an official music video, complete with a minute-long preamble set in a Mojo Dojo Casa House recording studio bedecked in festive decorations. Gosling (or is he in character as Ken… we simply cannot tell) frets about whether “I’m Just Ken (Merry Kristmas Barbie)” will feel fresh. He suggests a dramatic piano solo. “The Christmas is making it fresh,” Ronson reassures him, candy cane in hand.
Ryan eventually readies himself to sing by “getting into character” with a pair of sunglasses “because the world can have Ken’s voice but only Barbie can have his eyes.”
And then, they launch into “I’m Just Ken (Merry Kristmas Barbie)”—which is essentially a rendition of the original song with an underscore of festive orchestrations and jingle bells… and the added bonus of a surprisingly soulful performance from Gosling. Honestly, it’s everything we’ve ever wanted. BRB, adding this to the top of our Christmas playlists.
