Leah Remini Details Her Lack of Education Due to Scientology

Published

on

Leah Remini is proudly furthering her education after leaving the Church of Scientology in 2013.

“Two years ago, I had an eighth-grade education thanks to spending 35 years in a cult,” the King of Queens alum wrote via Instagram on Friday, June 2. “And now, at age 52, I’ve successfully finished my second year at NYU.”

Remini — who has long been outspoken against the church and its controversial teachings — added: “Undertaking this educational journey has been one of the most difficult experiences of my life. There have been days where I’ve thought about giving up. While I’m still not finished, I’m so glad I decided to dive in.”

She concluded the post with a hopeful message to her 3.6 million followers: “If you have the desire and the capacity, please remember that it’s never too late to start again.”

The two-time Emmy winner’s celeb pals were quick to congratulate her in the comments.

“Love you, babycakes,” Chelsea Handler wrote. “Proud of u always,” shared Rosie O’Donnell.

The former Scientology and the Aftermath host previously claimed the church stifled her education after eighth grade.

“Scientologists are taught that kids are no different from adults. So from a very young age I was held accountable like an adult and regularly told that anything bad that happened in my life, even things that I wasn’t responsible for, was my fault,” Remini wrote in a lengthy Twitter thread she shared in January 2022. “Even though I was just 16 at the time, I hadn’t received any sort of formal education for years. Instead, I had been working for years so that I could support myself and my family. For the last 38 years of my life, I have been living and working with an 8th grade education.”

The Exes alum continued: “L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, had a deep disdain for conventional education and since everything in Scientology is guided directly by his policies, with no room for interpretation, my education was interrupted.”

Though Remini was a teen at the time, she broke into acting in order to help save her family from financial ruin — and to be looked upon favorably in the Scientology community.

“I saw a successful acting career as a salvation. It would help me get my family out of poverty and give me a higher standing in Scientology which I truly believed was helping to save mankind,” she tweeted. “At the time, we were living in squalor with no furniture. Every spare cent we had went to Scientology for mandatory courses, sessions, and treatments. I was determined to get my family into better circumstances.”

Reflecting on her decision to enroll at New York University in her 50s, Remini wrote, “Had you told me then that I would be a student at NYU at age 51, I wouldn’t have believed it. I had big dreams back then but when I look back they were rooted in my desire to survive … I couldn’t have imagined a world in which I would be a university student at my age.”

As the New York native continues her own education, her 18-year-old daughter, Sofia, is in college as well.

“Long story … but, one of the things I’ve learned in life is that there is always time to course correct. There’s no sense in sticking to something that doesn’t work for you. In any situation. At any point in your life,” Remini, who shares Sofia with husband Angelo Pagan, wrote via Instagram in February about their daughter’s educational journey. “In August, our daughter Sofia enrolled in a college she thought was meant for her. I moved her into a dorm room and came home heartbroken to a quiet house.”

When Sofia’s first-choice university “didn’t make sense for her,” the teen left and moved back home with her parents before transferring schools. While Remini had already gone through moving her only child out of the house — and was proud of her for pursuing her educational pursuits — she didn’t expect the second go of it to hit her so hard.

“Crying, not knowing what to do with ourselves now other than looking at pictures and videos and crying some more,” the Kevin Can Wait alum shared in her Instagram post.

Travis Kelce Responds to Mark Cuban’s Joke About Taylor Swift

Travis Kelce had the perfect response to Mark Cuban after he suggested Taylor Swift date one of the players on the Dallas Mavericks.

“Taylor, sorry if you’re listening Travis, break up with him,” Cuban, 65, said during a Thursday, September 28, appearance on ESPN’s “First Take” show. “I got a bunch of good-looking single guys that play for the Dallas Mavericks. I gotchu.”

Kelce, 33, took to social media to propose a compromise with the Mavericks owner.

“@mcuban Just sign me to a ten day [contract]! 😎,” Kelce quipped via X. (In the NBA, a ten day contract is considered a temporary deal designed to help a team for a short period of time.)

Hollywood and the entire NFL are in need of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce friendship bracelets. Ever since Kelce revealed he got shut down by Swift after one of her Eras Tour performances in July 2023 — he wanted to give her a friendship bracelet with his number on it, but she had “to save […]

Swift, 33, and Kelce’s relationship status has been a hot topic since the singer showed up to a Kansas City Chiefs game over the weekend. On Sunday, September 24, Swift watched the tight end and his team took on the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead Stadium — the same venue where Kelce watched Swift take the stage for her Eras Tour and failed to give her his phone number.

Swift was seen on screen in a stadium box alongside Travis’ mom, Donna Kelce. The Grammy winner cheered when Travis scored a touchdown and seemingly shouted, “Let’s f–king go!” at one point. The Chiefs had a landslide victory over the Bears.

After the game, the pair were photographed leaving the stadium together and driving in Travis’ convertible. Travis and Swift were later seen getting cozy at a postgame celebration.

Travis later reflected on the memorable experience he had with Swift coming to support him.

“I just thought it was awesome that everybody in the suite had nothing but great things to say about her. The friends and family. She looked amazing … and on top of that, the day went perfect for Chiefs fans. We script it all, ladies and gentlemen,” he recalled on the Wednesday, September 27, episode of his “New Heights” podcast with brother Jason Kelce. “It was absolutely electric.”

Following their episode, Jason, 35, shared what he knew about his brother’s new romance. “I wish I could tell you. I have gotten no inclination from Travis … I would say with this one, it definitely seems like he is going above and beyond to be a gentleman,” Jason said during a Wednesday appearance on SportsRadio 94 WIP. “I think that he can probably handle both of those gears when necessary.”

While Jason doesn’t have the full rundown on Travis and Swift, a source exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this week that the twosome have only met up a few times so far.

“Taylor and Travis met shortly after he tried giving her his phone number at her show earlier this summer,” the insider shared. “They’ve only hung out twice.”

Wynonna Judd Honors Mom Naomi at 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards

Wynonna Judd gave a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Naomi Judd, during her acceptance speech for the Country Champion Award at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards.

“So I graduated high school in 1982 and [in] 1983 got a record deal with RCA records and I got on a silver eagle bus with my mama and did her hair every night for 10 years for free,” Wynonna said on Thursday, September 28. “I started there, 10 years later she would have to retire and I would go on to make country music ‘herstory.’”

Wynonna then recalled the challenging moment she lost her mom in April 2022 to suicide.

“I went to her house, and she died there, but we followed the ambulance anyway to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. And I walked into the room and I held her in my arms and I kissed her on the forehead, shut her eyes and said, ‘I love you mom,’” she recalled. “And I walked out of that room, went home, got up the next morning and showed up at the Country Music Hall of Fame to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. You know why? Because that’s how much we love music regardless of what has happened to me and who I show up and I show out.”

The best and brightest in country music stepped out in style to commemorate the first-ever People’s Choice Country Awards.  The inaugural ceremony took place on Thursday, September 28, at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. The show also aired live on NBC and Peacock.  In addition to the fierce looks, fan-favorite singers and crooners, including […]

The singer recalled how she and fellow country star Tim McGraw have both opened for one another on their respective tours over the years.

“Back in 1990, Tim McGraw opened for me, four weeks ago I opened for Tim,” she reflected. “The highs are high and the lows are low, baby, but don’t ever let them tell you who you are.”

Before becoming a successful solo artist, Wynonna got her start in country music thanks to her mother as they formed the duo The Judds together in 1983. The mother-daughter pair recorded six studio albums from 1984 to 1990 and continued to perform together until Naomi’s death.

“Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness,” Wynonna and sister Ashley Judd wrote in a joint statement at the time. “We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”

Four months after Naomi’s passing, the autopsy report revealed that the late singer died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In September 2022, Wynonna opened up about how she was coping with the loss of her mother and how it brought her closer to her sister, with whom she has had ups and downs.

“We both kind of look at each other like, ‘I’ve got you,’ right? And we look at each other and we say, ‘Yeah.’ We’re so united right now, I think more so than we have been in a long time,” Wynonna explained of her bond with Ashley, 55, following the loss of their mom in a segment with CBS Sunday Mornings.

Gone, but not forgotten. The country music world has lost many of their biggest and brightest stars, from Naomi Judd to Loretta Lynn over the years. The Judds singer’s daughters, Wynonna and Ashley Judd, revealed that their mother died in April 2022 at the age of 76, after a long battle with depression. “Today we […]

Wynonna was the first recipient bestowed the honor at the newest country music awards show. The accolade was given to Wynonna for her musical achievements in addition to her charitable work with the Wounded Warrior Project and Habitat for Humanity while also advocating for mental health awareness.

“Wynonna is one of the most recognized and lauded performers in country music,” Senior Vice President of NBCUniversal Entertainment Cassandra Tryon said in a press release earlier this month, noting that the singer is also hosting the NBC country music holiday special, Christmas at the Opry, in December. “Not only is she incredibly talented, her selflessness and passion for putting the needs of others in the spotlight is unmatched. We can’t think of a better person to honor as our inaugural ‘Country Champion’ and to celebrate the holidays with across these two major country music events.”
