Always in our hearts. Hollywood mourned the loss of icons such as Betty White and John Madden in the final days of 2021 — and unfortunately, 2022 also came with celebrity deaths that have fans reeling.
The sports world lost a football great in Dan Reeves who passed away on January 1. The 77-year-old Georgia native appeared in nine Super Bowls during his career — winning once as a player and once as an assistant coach.
As one of the winningest coaches in the league’s history, his loss was felt near and far. “The football world lost a heckuva coach and man today in Dan Reeves,” former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway said in a statement on January 1. “Dan was a winner and I owe a lot to him. My heart goes out to Pam and the entire Reeves family.”
One day later, the Christian music industry lost a beloved musician Jay Weaver. His former Big Daddy Weave bandmate and brother, Mike Weaver, confirmed his passing following COVID-19 complications. Jay was 42.
“Thank you so much for all your prayers for my brother,” Mike said in a statement on January 2, after Jay was hospitalized with the virus a few days prior. “You have walked with him through a huge fight, and I’m so sorry to bring this news but I’m also excited to celebrate where he is right now. My brother Jay went to be with Jesus just a couple hours ago due to complications due to COVID-19 on top of everything else that he already had going on.”
He continued: “The Lord used [Jay] in such a might way out on the road for so many years … I believe even though COVID may have taken his last breath, Jesus was right there to catch him. My heart’s broke for my family, but we all just really wanted to thank you for walking with us through so much for so long.”
On January 5, the Korean film world mourned the death of a young star in Kim Mi-soo, who passed away at age 29.
“Kim suddenly left us on January 5,” the late performer’s agency, Landscape Entertainment, said in a statement translated by the publication Korea JoongAng Daily. “The bereaved are deep in their sorrow at the sudden sadness. Please refrain from reporting false rumors or speculation so that the family can mourn in peace.”

A honky-tonk romance! Luke Combs has a forever fan in his wife, Nicole Combs (née Hocking) — and it’s been documented in the country artist’s songs.
The “Beer Never Broke My Heart” crooner and Nicole became friends through their mutual acquaintances shortly after she moved to Nashville in 2014. Two years later, the relationship changed when the pair ran into each other at a songwriters’ festival in Florida.
“I didn’t have anything going on when we met,” Luke recalled during a March 2020 joint appearance on the “Couple Things With Shawn Johnson and Andrew East” podcast. “I didn’t have a record deal or a publishing deal or anything.”
Nicole, who was working for Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) at the event, remembered making the first move.
“I was leaving a songwriters’ round and he was walking up late to it, and I was just like, ‘Hey, come hang out with us, why are you by yourself?’” the Florida Gulf Coast University alum explained.
Luke laughed as he detailed his “bad” outfit choice for the occasion. “I was wearing camo gym shorts from Walmart … classy, classy stuff,” he joked. “And, like, the oldest T-shirt that I owned, probably.”
The “She Got the Best of Me” singer’s ensemble, however, didn’t deter their budding romance. In fact, a few months into their relationship, Luke revealed he’d previously written his hit song “Beautiful Crazy” about Nicole, which only strengthened their connection.
The Florida native has since been the inspiration behind many of Luke’s tracks, including “Better Together” and “Nothing Like You.”
Following their August 2020 nuptials, the two-time CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year winner again paid homage to his and Nicole’s love story by featuring moments from their life in his April 2021 music video for “Forever After All.”
Less than one year later, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child together. Their son, Tex, arrived in June 2022, just in time for Father’s Day.
“Me and @nicolejcombs are over the moon in love with this little guy. Mama and baby are healthy and we’re back home now with family,” Luke wrote via Instagram at the time. “Life is good. Everyone welcome Tex Lawrence Combs to the world!”
Two months later, the new parents celebrated two years of marriage. “Can’t believe it’s been 2 years since I got to marry this angel,” the “When It Rains It Pours” musician wrote via social media in August 2022. “@nicolejcombs you make every day of my life better than the one before. I love you so much and I can’t wait for all the good times still to come with you and our little family.”

Amanda Bynes Reportedly Placed on 72-Hour Psychiatric Hold

Amanda Bynes was reportedly placed under a 72-hour psychiatric hold, a source close to the situation told NBC News on Monday, March 20.
While the 36-year-old actress’ longtime attorney shared that he was not in a position to comment on the situation, the insider added that “she hasn’t been in contact with her family for quite some time.”
The former Nickelodeon star was reportedly seen walking through downtown L.A. without any clothes on Sunday, March 19, according to TMZ. The All That alum allegedly waved down a passing car and told the driver she was coming down from a psychotic episode. She then called 911 on her own and was taken to a police station, where the mental health team determined she needed to be put on a 5150 psychiatric hold.
The hold allows someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis to be detained for 72 hours for psychiatric hospitalization because of a potential threat of harming themselves or others, or being gravely disabled.
Bynes was scheduled to appear at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, this weekend but dropped out on Friday, March 17, shortly before the event began. The convention’s production company, That’s4Entertainment, revealed the news via Instagram, noting that the California native was suffering from an undisclosed illness.
During the All That panel on Saturday, March 18, Bynes’ former costar Kel Mitchell asked fans to “send a prayer” to the Easy A star to “feel better,” but didn’t disclose further details about her health. Kenan Thompson — who starred alongside Mitchell, 44, in Kenan & Kel — replaced Bynes at the event as a surprise guest.
Bynes rose to fame as a child star in the late 1990s, appearing on All That before landing her own spinoff, The Amanda Show. She went on to star in a string of successful teen comedies including She’s the Man, What a Girl Wants and Easy A.
In August 2013, the Big Fat Liar star was placed under a temporary conservatorship amid a series of mental health and substance abuse issues. The decision came shortly after Bynes was hospitalized and placed on a psychiatric hold for setting a fire in a neighbor’s driveway.
One year later, the actress’ mother, Lynn Bynes, was named the conservator of her daughter’s health care and personal matters. In August 2021, the conservatorship of Amanda’s estate was terminated, but Lynn still had legal control of her person, meaning she could make medical decisions for the Figure It Out alum.
Last year, Amanda filed a petition to terminate her conservatorship and filed a mental capacity declaration stating that she is mentally fit to look after herself and her affairs. In court documents obtained by Us Weekly in February 2022, a psychiatrist noted that Amanda has “no apparent impairment in alertness and attention, information and processing or ability to modulate mood and affect and suffers no thought disorders.”
One month later, a judge put an end to the conservatorship after Lynn submitted a declaration of support for her daughter’s request to end the adult guardianship. “She’s doing great both physically and mentally,” a source exclusively told Us of Amanda in March 2022. “She’s elated the judge agreed with her request and is determined to make the most of this next chapter.”
Shortly after the conservatorship was terminated, Amanda made headlines when police were called to the home she shared with then-fiancé Paul Michael. Officers from the Los Angeles Department visited the residence in April 2022 after Amanda claimed on social media that his alleged behavior had started to concern her.
“Paul told me that he stopped taking his medications. I looked at his phone and he was looking at mom-and-son porn. He vandalized his mom’s home. He broke all of her pictures and put salmon under her bed,” Amanda alleged in since-deleted Instagram videos, noting that she’d kicked Michael out of her home. “His behavior is alarming, and I’m afraid of what he’ll do.”
Michael, for his part, denied his then-fiancée’s claims, saying he didn’t know “what the f–k” she was referring to. “Y’all gotta stop talking your s–t,” he said before deleting his account. “You guys don’t f–king know anything.”

Believe! ‘Ted Lasso’ Cast Visits White House to Discuss Mental Health

Believing in well-being! The cast of Ted Lasso helped President Joe Biden discuss the importance of mental health by making a special appearance at the White House.
Jason Sudeikis — along with costars Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, James Lance and Toheeb Jimoh — visited the President and First Lady, Jill Biden, on Monday, March 20, to assist in tackling the mental health crisis, which is the centerpiece of the Biden Administration’s Unity Agenda. Prior to their meeting with the commander-in-chief himself, the cast participated in a press conference alongside press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
“It’s sincerely an honor to visit the White House and have the opportunity to speak to the President and First Lady about the importance of mental health. No matter who you are, no matter where you live, no matter who you voted for, we all — probably, I assume — we all know someone — or have been that someone ourselves, actually — who has struggled, that’s felt isolated, that’s felt anxious, that’s felt alone,” Sudeikis, 47 — who portrays titular character Ted Lasso on the AppleTV+ series — told reporters. “And it’s actually one of the many things, believe it or not, that we all have in common as human beings. That means it’s something we can all — and should — talk about with one another when we’re feeling that way.”
He continued, “A big theme of the show is to check in with your neighbor, your coworker, your friends, your family and ask how they’re doing and listen. While it’s easier said than done, we also have to know that we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help ourselves. And that does take a lot, especially when it’s something that has such a negative stigma to it such as mental health, and that doesn’t need to be that way.”
The Saturday Night Live alum went on to urge people to find help from either a “professional” or “loved one” in their lives, adding that while Americans don’t always “agree” on everything, he believes “we should all do our best to help take care of each other” — something the characters of Ted Lasso do quite well.
“That’s my own personal belief that’s what everyone here on stage feels. That’s something we talk about in the writer’s room and we talk about in the editing room and everything in between,” he shared. “I just want to emulate the folks we play at AFC Richmond and the way they take care of each other. That is the wish fulfillment on the show.”
While the hit comedy, which premiered in August 2020, centers around an American football coach (Sudeikis) who is hired to manage a British soccer team, the show has pushed beyond the confines of athletics to touch on important topics including mental health over the years. Season 2 saw Lasso struggle with panic attacks and depression as learned to let go of preconceived notions and find solace in therapy. (Ted Lasso season 3 debuted on Wednesday, March 15.)
While Biden wasn’t present for the press conference on Monday — and Sudeikis refused to do his own impersonation of the politician while on stage — the President did take to social media on Sunday, March 19, in anticipation of the cast’s visit, tweeting a snap of a sign with the words “Believe” — Ted Lasso’s signature philosophy — taped above the door to the Oval Office.
“Tomorrow,” he captioned the image.
