I Tried Onion Shampoo for Hair Growth—And the Results Surprised Me

As a Leo rising, having long, healthy hair is pretty much a requirement. So, when a new trend promises to stimulate growth, soothe the scalp, and boost hair health, I’m game to try it out, even if that means using a product with onion juice on my strands.

On #BeautyTok, users (including Cardi B) have claimed that onion juice rinses help hair growth, and there’s actually some legit science behind it. Some research suggests that due to the high sulfur content from onion juice, it can support the strength and structure of hair, says Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist.

While the trend may sound a little stinky, I chose to go the shampoo route, which was surprisingly odor-free. Because a preliminary study suggests that onion extract may improve scalp circulation, several brands now include it in their formulas. I tried Fable & Mane’s Volumizing Shampoo (and matching conditioner) for a month, and the results surprised me.

About Fable & Mane’s Volumizing Shampoo

At first glance, the Fable & Mane Volumizing Shampoo looks like any other luxe product. There’s not a whiff of onion anywhere on the bottle. The front label actually highlights fenugreek, another kitchen-cabinet ingredient known for scalp and strand benefits.

The formula targets medium to fine hair and promises fuller-looking volume, shine, and strength. Key ingredients include fenugreek to help plump strands, onion extract to support growth and reduce breakage, and amla (Indian gooseberry) to condition and protect against UV damage.

How I tested

I wash my hair about once or twice a week, so I swapped my usual shampoo and conditioner for Fable & Mane for a month. The Volumizing Conditioner lists onion juice as one of its hero ingredients, too, and promotes similar benefits for fine, dry, and thinning hair. Because my hair is so long and I don’t wash it that often, it tends to be on the drier side. My texture is naturally fine, so this duo was perfect for me.

First impression

I braced for an onion scent but caught only an earthy, pleasant fragrance. The shampoo felt lightweight, producing a moderate lather—not overly sudsy but enough to feel cleansing. The conditioner was surprisingly smoothing; I could detangle without a separate mask or treatment. blow-drying, my hair looked fuller and shinier than usual, with noticeable lift at the roots—rare for my waist-length strands.

Pros:

  • Easy to swap into my routine.
  • Noticeably more volume.
  • Hair looked shinier and felt smoother.
  • Needed fewer styling or treatment products.
  • No onion smell.
  • The formulas felt nice and performed well.

Cons:

  • Not a cure for hair thinning or loss.
  • Pump dispenser didn’t dispense enough product.
  • Smaller bottles than other shampoos and conditioners.
  • On the pricier side.
  • Some people might find the scent overpowering.

Over the month, I washed my hair about four more times. And each time, I observed new things. After the first wash, my hair got oily faster than usual, but that balanced out with continued use. In fact, I found that the more I washed with the onion formula, the better my hair looked, even days after washing. My biggest gripe with the formula wasn’t actually about the shampoo or conditioner itself, but with the packaging. Although the pump top sounds great in theory, I found it didn’t dispense much product, and it was awkward to keep pressing the dispenser while I stood in the shower. This can also be chalked up to the fact that I have long hair and need more product, and that I wanted to get the full experience, so it might not be as big an issue for others.
