Sir Elton John makes 19! The rocket man became the 19th person to achieve EGOT status in 2024 after his Disney+ concert film won an Emmy. (An EGOT, if you don’t know, is someone in entertainment who’s won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony award.)
Last year, Viola Davis because number 18, and the year before that, Jennifer Hudson, an actor, singer, and producer, became the 17th person to reach this milestone after she received a Tony Award as a producer on best musical winner A Strange Loop. Prolific composer Alan Menken, known primarily for his expansive work with Disney—he wrote the music for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and others—became the 16th person to be inducted into the elite EGOT club when he took home a Daytime Emmy in 2020, for best original song in a children’s, young adult, or animated program for Disney Channel’s Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.
John Legend became the youngest (and first Black male) of the EGOT winners in 2018, when he took home an Emmy for his work on NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live. Not many people have achieved this feat—Meryl Streep can’t even call herself an EGOT—and at the time he joined an illustrious club of 14 other actors, writers, producers, composers, and singers who’ve all won the four coveted awards.
